Aquinas Academy is made up of four classes, each consisting of two grades (1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8). A class will contain no more than 12 students in each grade, making the maximum class size 24. Each class will have one teacher and one daily assistant. Paid teaching positions can be filled by Aquinas Academy parents, provided they can commit to the position for the period of at least one trimester. Assistant positions pay $40 a day and are signed up for a day at a time. They are generally filled by Aquinas parents looking to reduce tuition costs, but can also supply other family members such as college students with an opportunity to help, gain experience, and earn a little money.
I am John Jimenez, administrator of Aquinas Academy. I have a California teaching credential and Masters Degree in Education. After two years teaching fifth and sixth grade in Fontana, I have taught fourth grade for 11 years at St. Edward the Confessor parish school in Dana Point, where I also serve as the school's religion coordinator. I am a certified catechist and have taught Confirmation classes as well as RCIA to teens. I have also coached youth baseball and written educational texts for Seton home education.
I founded Aquinas Academy because we are a homeschooling family for our four boys. As I learned about classical education, I knew that was what I wanted for my own children, and felt called to try and provide an opportunity for other families as well. I also desire to help families like ours who desire to provide their children with a Catholic education, but are financially prohibited from doing so. Finally, I am seeking to answer the needs of families who over the years told me they wanted to homeschool their children but didn't think they would be able to without a support program like what I have tried to create with Aquinas Academy.
I have decided to found this program because I believe it is what God is calling me to do at this time. I know that if He desires it, He will provide for it. But I ask for your prayers, as He has chosen an imperfect instrument indeed.
